Conway,SC April 28,2006 Consumers from throughout the Carolinas and across the nation are receiving phony emails “Phishing” for personal identifying information. John Trudeau, president of The Better Business Bureau of Carolina, strongly urges consumers not to respond to any e-mail from supposed financial institutions asking you to submit information for passwords or authorization to receive an online security token for your online banking work. No financial institution will ever ask you for personal identification numbers or passwords via e-mail, Trudeau emphasizes. These phony bank security alerts attempt to scare consumers into thinking their bank account is going to be suspended if there is no response to the e-mail. Keep in mind these e-mails often use the actual logo of a legitimate financial institution in hopes you will fall victim to their scam. Whenever you are in receipt of a questionable e-mail, contact your local bank and speak with the security department or call your local BBB.
